Geek Squad auto-renewal scam

In this scam, scammers send emails or text messages saying you’ve signed up for the Geek Squad’s subscription service and will be charged hundreds or thousands of dollars if you don’t stop.

Most of the time, the message has a phone number to call if the charge was a “mistake.” When you call, they’ll ask for your credit card number or other banking information so they can “refund you.” Though, they’ll use that information to steal from you or scam your money.

This scam can sometimes turn into a “refund scam.” This happens when thieves use stolen accounts or credit cards to send you more money and ask you to “refund” the difference.

When the real account user reports the fraud, you’ll lose the full amount plus whatever you sent to the scammer.

How to recognize this scam

• You get an invoice or an auto-renewal notice for Geek Squad services you didn’t request. 
• The message includes signs that it’s a phishing scam. For example, it doesn’t come from a “BestBuy.com” email address, has spelling and grammatical errors, and doesn’t use the proper Geek Squad logo. 
• You’re asked to call a phone number other than the official Best Buy number to “resolve” the error.
